The FIFA World Cup Group I match between France and Iraq was suspended at half-time on Monday after severe weather and the threat of lightning prompted emergency safety measures at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

France were leading 1-0 at the break thanks to an early strike from Kylian Mbappé, who opened the scoring in the 14th minute, before deteriorating weather conditions brought proceedings to a halt.

Heavy rain swept across the stadium shortly before half-time, while lightning activity in the surrounding area triggered established safety protocols. Spectators were instructed to leave exposed seating areas and seek shelter as officials assessed the situation.

FIFA confirmed the suspension in an official statement.

“Due to adverse weather conditions in Philadelphia, including the risk of lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq has been suspended,” the governing body said.

Broadcaster Kelly Cates explained that officials were monitoring conditions closely before deciding when play could resume.

“There is a delay to the start of the second half because of lightning activity in the area around the stadium,” she said during the BBC’s coverage.

“Fans are being asked to take shelter outside the stadium bowl itself. There are strong safety protocols in place in the United States. Once there has been no lightning activity for 15 minutes, the players will return to warm up before the match resumes.”

The interruption came with France in control of the contest following Mbappé’s breakthrough goal, while Iraq were hoping to regroup during the interval and mount a second-half response.

Officials continued to monitor the weather as players, staff and supporters awaited further updates on when the match could safely restart. The suspension is the latest reminder of the strict weather-related safety regulations in place at major sporting events across the United States, particularly where lightning poses a risk to participants and spectators.
