The Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 22 athletes and officials from Kano State, who lost their lives in a horrific road accident while returning to their base from the recent National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

In a statement released on yesterday by the acting SWAN Secretary in Kogi State, Olatunde Odimayo, the incident was described as both tragic and painful.

While extending condolences to the bereaved families for their irreplaceable loss, the sports body also offered its sympathies to the Kano State Government and SWAN in the state during this challenging time.

“We are profoundly affected by this tragic event. Reports indicate that these individuals were young, vibrant, and promising talents, determined to bring pride to Kano State both nationally and internationally.

“Our thoughts are with their families during this difficult period. SWAN Kogi is calling on the Kano State Government to urgently immortalise these fallen heroes, who dedicated their lives to the advancement of the state,” the statement read.

It is recalled that 22 members of the Kano State contingent perished in the road accident while returning home after their participation in the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.
