Former France striker Olivier Giroud has congratulated Kylian Mbappé after the Real Madrid forward became France’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Mbappé surpassed Giroud’s previous record of 57 international goals by scoring twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Giroud, who was working as a pundit during the game, was quick to praise his former international team-mate for reaching the landmark.
“Congratulations, Kylian. I am delighted for him,” Giroud said. “It was expected and thoroughly deserved. He will probably break every record, whether in terms of goals or appearances.
“I believe he can reach 100 goals and perhaps even challenge Miroslav Klose’s World Cup scoring record. He has consistently delivered on the biggest stages.”
Mbappé’s latest goals further cement his place among the greatest forwards in French football history, having already surpassed the international scoring tallies of legends such as Just Fontaine, Michel Platini, Jean-Pierre Papin and Thierry Henry.
Despite the individual achievement, Mbappé insisted his focus remains firmly on helping France retain the World Cup rather than answering his critics.
“There is no concept of revenge,” he said. “If I played only to silence critics, I would have to continue until I am 80.
“I play to make history for my country. The most important thing is helping France win the World Cup. This is only the first match and we must stay focused on our objectives.”
The 27-year-old also warned against complacency, stressing that every match at a World Cup presents a unique challenge.
“You can never relax at a World Cup. Every team wants to make history for their country, and every match is difficult.”
