Team Nigeria will today begin its quest for Commonwealth Games glory as the 2026 Commonwealth Games officially open in Glasgow, Scotland, marking the country’s 20th appearance at the prestigious multi-sport event.

The Games, which run from 23 July to 2 August, represent a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sporting history, coming exactly 76 years after the nation’s debut at the 1950 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), all 74 Nigerian athletes have arrived safely in Glasgow and are settled in the Games Village ahead of the start of competition.

The Nigerian delegation is led by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, alongside Commonwealth Games Ambassadors, former NSC Directors-General Gbenga Elegbeleye and Alhassan Yakmut, renowned sports administrator Dr Amos Adamu, and veteran broadcaster Victor Iroele.

Team Nigeria will proudly parade in elegant green-and-white traditional ceremonial attire during the Opening Ceremony at the OVO Hydro, showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage before a global audience.

The colourful outfits are expected to make the Nigerian contingent one of the most visually striking delegations during the traditional Parade of Nations.

Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1950, Nigeria has established itself as one of the competition’s leading sporting nations, producing champions in athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, para sports and several other disciplines.

The Commonwealth Games, first staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930 with 11 participating nations, have grown into one of the world’s foremost international multi-sport events, bringing together athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

This year’s edition will feature around 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports, with events taking place at world-class venues across Glasgow.

The Opening Ceremony is expected to celebrate Scotland’s rich cultural heritage with performances by acclaimed singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, alongside Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Nathan Evans and SAINT PHNX, while electronic folk duo Valtos will provide the soundtrack for the Parade of Nations.

The ceremony will also mark the conclusion of the King’s Baton Relay and will be attended by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who are expected to officially declare the Games open.

For Team Nigeria, Glasgow 2026 offers another opportunity to strengthen a proud Commonwealth Games legacy spanning more than seven decades.

With months of intensive preparation, improved athlete welfare initiatives introduced by the National Sports Commission, and a squad comprising world champions, Paralympic medallists, Commonwealth champions and promising young talents, Nigeria will be aiming for another successful campaign on one of international sport’s biggest stages.
