Glasgow Commonwealth Games Medal Earns Oshodi Judo Stakeholders’ Support

Stakeholders in Nigerian judo have passed a vote of confidence in the President of the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF), Dr Musa Oshodi, following the country’s bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The endorsements came separately from the Nigeria Judo Coaches Association, Referees Association and the athletes’ representative in letters issued on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s medal in Glasgow, won by Enku Ekuta, ended the country’s 24-year wait for a judo medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The Nigeria Judo Coaches Association, in a letter signed by its President, Coach Oluwatoyin Emmanuel Ojo, said the sport had recorded progress under Oshodi’s leadership and congratulated the federation on Ekuta’s achievement.

The association described the bronze medal as evidence of the progress being made in Nigerian judo and pledged its support for the federation’s leadership.

The Referees Association, led by its Chairman, Godspower Geoffrey, also endorsed Oshodi’s administration, pointing to the Glasgow result as a significant milestone for the sport.

“This landmark accomplishment is a testament to Dr Oshodi’s strategic reforms, athlete-centred policies and dedication to repositioning Nigerian Judo on the global stage,” the association said.

It reaffirmed its support for the NJF president and expressed confidence in the federation’s ability to build on the Commonwealth Games performance.

The athletes’ representative, Franca Audu, also pledged the support of Nigerian judokas for Oshodi and the federation’s leadership.

The endorsements come after a significant Commonwealth Games outing for Nigerian judo, with Ekuta’s bronze providing the country with its first medal in the sport at the Games in 24 years.

The stakeholders, however, stressed the need for continued investment and development programmes to ensure that the Glasgow breakthrough translates into sustained improvement across domestic and international competitions.

They urged the federation to maintain its focus on athlete development and create stronger pathways for judokas to progress from local competitions to continental and global events.

The vote of confidence gives Oshodi’s administration backing from key groups within the sport as the federation seeks to build on Nigeria’s return to the Commonwealth Games judo medal podium.
