Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal has ordered a detailed overhaul of the Community Protection Guards (CPG) to address challenges impeding the agency’s performance.
The governor also approved the appointment of Retired Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police, Dr. Muhammad Shehu Dalijan, as the CPG Commandant.
A statement by Suleman Ahmad Tudu, Media aide to the Zamfara SSG said the directive to overhaul CPG is part of Governor Lawal’s determination to ensure effective service delivery.
“Governor Dauda Lawal has consistently demonstrated his commitment to combating the challenges of insecurity in Zamfara state. He is poised to seeing CPG work better for effective and efficient service delivery”
Tudu said Governor Lawal is confident that the new Commandant would deploy his knowledge of the State’s security challenges in running the CPG to effectively deliver on its mandate in line with the rescue agenda of the administration.
According to him, the Governor also commended the immediate past Commandant for his selfless service to the State, prayed for his speedy recovery, and reassured him of the Government’s continued solidarity and support.
The new Commandant has over three decades experience in policing, security management and leadership, with a proven track record in community engagement and counter-terrorism operations.
Between 2023 and 2025, he served as Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State. His other positions in the Nigerian Police force include Police Component Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole (North-East); Deputy Commandant, Police College Kaduna; Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Rivers State; and Coordinator, Operation Restore Peace (South-South), among others.
Until his retirement from service in June 2025, he served as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Counter-Terrorism at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The new CPG commandant is a 1990 graduate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University where he bagged a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Criminology from the University of Abuja.
