In a bold push toward sustainable development, the Katsina State Government, under the leadership of Governor Umaru Dikko Radda, is making remarkable strides with transformative investments in agriculture and water resources.
From empowering farmers with modern tools to expanding access to clean water across rural and urban areas, the administration’s initiatives are reshaping livelihoods and laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.
The government’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainable development is evident in a series of ambitious projects aimed at transforming the socio-economic landscape of the state. One such project is the provision of water supply to areas such as Tudun Matawalle, Sardauna Estate, Fatima Shema Estate, Ambassador Quarters, FMC Quarters, and Batagarawa Town.
These efforts underscore the administration’s resolve to ensure that urban communities have reliable access to clean water, improving health and sanitation outcomes for thousands of residents.
Rural communities have also felt the positive impact of these interventions through the activities of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA).
The agency has constructed 120 hand pump boreholes and 25 solar-powered boreholes for primary schools and health centres in Baure, Batagarawa, Daura, Funtua, Kafur, and Katsina Local Government Areas.
Additionally, another 50 hand pumps and 46 solar-powered boreholes are under construction in eight other local governments, further expanding access to potable water.
To ensure sustainability, Water Sanitation and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOMS) have been established to maintain the infrastructure, while community members have received training and repair tools to carry out routine maintenance.
These measures aim to instil a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents, ensuring the long-term functionality of water supply systems.
The administration’s approach to agricultural and water resources development goes beyond infrastructure; it is rooted in sustainability and long-term impact.
The establishment of the Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA) exemplifies this vision. Ongoing projects under this agency aim to supply potable water to 21 small towns across the state at a cost of over N10.2 billion.
Once completed, these projects are expected to provide clean water to over 182,000 people, significantly improving health outcomes and quality of life in the benefiting communities.
Furthermore, the government’s focus on irrigation farming through the Katsina State Irrigation Development Authority (KTIDA)highlights its commitment to year-round food production.
Massive investments in 4,000 powered tillers, 4,000 solar-powered pumps, and 48,000 cartons of fertilizers are geared toward strengthening dry-season vegetable farming, with all 34 Local Government Areas actively participating in these programmes.
By enhancing irrigation farming, the administration aims to increase agricultural productivity, reduce reliance on rain-fed farming, and ensure food security throughout the year.
In the broader agricultural landscape, the government has spearheaded initiatives that provide farmers with access to essential inputs and mechanized tools.
Notably, 20,000 metric tons of fertilizer have been procured for the 2024 farming season, amounting to a massive investment of N36 billion. Additionally, 400 tractors with full accessories, 2,000 hand planters, and 10 combine harvesters have been supplied to modernize farming operations.
Recognising the importance of proper storage and infrastructure, N790 million has been allocated to upgrade seven zonal produce stores located in Funtua, Daura, Katsina, Mani, Kankia, Kafinsoli, and Malumfashi.
These upgrades are crucial for reducing post-harvest losses and increasing profitability for farmers. Moreover, the revival of the Songhai Farm Centre in Makera, Dutsin-Ma Local Government, and the Cotton Value Chain Initiative further exemplify the administration’s drive to boost agricultural productivity and create job opportunities.
Women and rural farmers have also been major beneficiaries of the government’s agricultural agenda.
The Goat Rearing Initiative Programme stands out as a groundbreaking project with a total investment of N5.7 billion.
Under this initiative, 32,490 goats have been distributed to women across the state, with each woman receiving four goats while large-scale herders received 50 goats each.
The programme’s second phase focuses on genetic improvement through artificial insemination, with 3,000 goats earmarked for breeding at the Ladanawa Farm Centre. Additionally, 70 hectares of land have been allocated for pasture development and the construction of animal houses, ensuring a conducive environment for livestock rearing.
Another noteworthy empowerment initiative is the training of 150 women in backyard gardening and food supplement formulation, aimed at enhancing household nutrition while creating income-generating opportunities.
These programmes reflect the administration’s recognition of the critical role women play in agriculture and food security.
The achievements recorded across these critical sectors are a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering tangible results.
By providing farmers with modern tools, ensuring access to clean water, and empowering women and rural communities, Katsina State is laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and resilient future.
These projects not only address immediate needs but also create sustainable pathways for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and community well-being.
As highlighted by Deputy Governor Malam Faruk Lawal, the road ahead is one of continued growth and collaboration. Sustaining these achievements will require the collective effort of government institutions, development partners, and the people of Katsina State.
The foundation has been laid the future holds the promise of greater agricultural productivity, improved livelihoods, and sustainable access to clean water for all.
“By working together, we can accelerate progress and build a more prosperous state for generations to come.” Katsina is not just building infrastructure; it is building a legacy of resilience, prosperity, and sustainable development,” he said.
