Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has inaugurated a Sickle Cell Centre aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare services for people living with sickle cell disease, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state.
The governor also flagged off the symbolic distribution of free maternal and Accident and Emergency (A&E) commodities, new hospital bed sheets and 300 customised digital blood pressure monitors at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf said the newly established Sickle Cell Centre would provide free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, health promotion and specialised management of sickle cell disease under one roof.
He assured beneficiaries of his administration’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines and quality healthcare services to improve their wellbeing.
The governor explained that the distribution of 300 customised digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political office holders was informed by the increasing cases of sudden deaths associated with hypertension.
According to him, the initiative is designed to encourage regular blood pressure monitoring, early detection and prompt management of hypertension among government workers.
Governor Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the free maternal and A&E commodities programme, noting that the intervention had contributed significantly to reducing preventable deaths and improving access to emergency healthcare services across the state.
He commended the Commissioner for Health, the Hospital Management Board, healthcare workers, traditional rulers and development partners for their support in advancing healthcare delivery in Kano.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, described Governor Yusuf as a health-friendly leader whose administration had recorded remarkable achievements in the sector through the upgrade of healthcare facilities and improved access to quality medical services.
He disclosed that maternal mortality in the state had declined from over 1,300 recorded cases in 2023 to about 300 in 2026, attributing the improvement to deliberate government interventions.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, said the governor’s healthcare initiatives would benefit thousands of residents, describing the administration’s investments in the health sector as unprecedented.
