Tributes have flooded in from across music, film and politics following the death of Dolly Parton, the country music icon who died peacefully at her Nashville home on Tuesday, aged 80.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement from her nephew, Bryan Seaver, describing a life defined by wit, warmth and kindness that made people feel like family.

News of Parton’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans around the world, with many remembering her immense contribution to country music and her philanthropic work.

Her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, was among the first to respond, writing online that the world had lost “the purest soul,” and adding that Parton would live on “in the hearts of entire generations.”

Fellow country star Reba McEntire posted an emotional message calling Parton her “buddy” and thanking her for her huge impact on people all over the world.  Blake Shelton said being around Parton felt like spending time with the most loving member of your family, while singer Maren Morris said Parton was a rare figure “we could all agree on.”

George Strait, Kacey Musgraves and Kelsea Ballerini also shared personal messages, and Lily Tomlin, her 9 to 5 co-star, posted a photo simply captioned “No words….”

Hollywood was not left out in the tributes pouring in as actress, Reese Witherspoon, recalled Parton’s encouragement, saying her talent, wisdom and spirit had “lit up our lives,” while Jamie Lee Curtis said Parton was proof that meeting your heroes doesn’t always disappoint.

Patricia Heaton and Seth MacFarlane, who worked with Parton on ‘The Orville’, also offered condolences, and actress Amber Davies, her ‘9 to 5’ musical co-star, called Parton one of the first people to believe in her.

British star Sir Elton John said he was “devastated,” calling Parton “a giant of an artist – unique and irreplaceable.”  Legendary Dionne Warwick said she would miss Parton’s laughter and jokes, and musician Jack White offered a simple two-word tribute: “Instant Sainthood.”

Political tributes followed swiftly. US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Parton’s death was “a true loss for millions of people,” adding there had “never been anyone like her, and never will,” and ordering flags lowered nationwide for a week.

New York Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, called her an “irreplaceable champion of the working class,” while, according to Forbes reporting, figures including Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris also honoured her decades of advocacy for literacy, LGBTQ+ rights and working people. The Empire State Building was lit pink in her memory.

Parton’s six-decade career produced era-defining hits including ‘Jolene’, ‘9 to 5’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’, alongside more than 100 million album sales.

Beyond music, she built a lasting legacy through Dollywood and her Imagination Library children’s literacy programme.

She had spoken candidly in recent years about health struggles and grief following the March 2025 death of her husband, Carl Dean, telling fans she had let her own wellbeing slip while caring for him. Just ten days before she died, she cancelled a Dollywood appearance on doctors’ orders.

Her family’s statement closed with a line echoing one of her own most famous lyrics, a fitting farewell from a woman whose songs, they said, would remain her lasting gift to the world.
