How My Ex-Husband’s Abuse Cost Me Four Pregnancies — Actress Basira Beere

Nollywood actress Omoshalewa Yusuf, professionally known as Basira Beere, has opened up about her previous marriage, revealing that she survived severe domestic violence, which led to multiple miscarriages.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Talk To B podcast, the film star disclosed that she overlooked early red flags and advice from close associates who questioned her choice of partner. She stated that she financed approximately 70 percent of their wedding expenses out of support, yet physical abuse began just days after the ceremony.

“When I wanted to get married to him, my friends complained that I was marrying someone of a lower calibre than me,” Yusuf said. “When we wanted to do our wedding, I paid for about 70% of the ceremony. I thought I was supporting my man.”

According to Yusuf, the first instance of violence was triggered by a congratulatory message from a male acquaintance whom she addressed as dear. She added that her prolonged stay in the abusive home was largely due to societal pressure from her parents, who continually urged her to endure the marital crisis.

“His problem started about 2-3 days after the wedding,” she recounted. “Days after the wedding, a guy texted me to congratulate me on the wedding, and I called him dear, and that was when the problem started. It was so tough, he beat me so much that even our landlord tried to intervene.”

The actress noted that her ex-husband frequently assaulted her over minor disagreements, including an argument over musical preferences between Fuji singers Pasuma and Saheed Osupa. During that incident, he destroyed her mobile phone and physically assaulted her, which resulted in a miscarriage within three hours.

Yusuf revealed that she lost a total of four pregnancies due to persistent physical abuse before making the final decision to dissolve the marriage to protect her life.

“At a point, I was like, if this continues, we will kill ourselves someday. I lost about three or four pregnancies due to his beating me,” she disclosed. “I left there because I was scared for my life. We did not have any children together, and I thank God that I left because if I had waited a bit longer, something else would have happened.”
