A key player in the shared communications infrastructure sector, IHS Nigeria, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) aimed at deploying clean energy solutions and enhancing environmental health standards across Abuja.

The collaboration was formalised at IHS’s Lagos office. By aligning their capacities, IHS Nigeria and HSES intend to roll out community‐based projects aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable energy adoption in the FCT.

For IHS, with over 16,000 sites nationwide, the pact is an extension of its commitment to integrate solar and hybrid power systems into its operations, a strategy backed by more than US$750 million in investments over the past decade.

Speaking on the alliance, the CEO of IHS Nigeria, Mohamad Darwish emphasised that environmental stewardship is central to the company’s growth trajectory. “We are acutely aware of our carbon footprint. This partnership allows us to expand our sustainability agenda beyond telecom infrastructure into community health and climate resilience,” he said.

Mandate Secretary of HSES, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, underlined the link between a clean environment and public health. “This collaboration demonstrates how public and private sectors must unite to safeguard citizens’ well‑being. Through shared initiatives such as promoting clean cooking methods, deploying off‐grid solar solutions, and reducing air pollution, we hope the FCT becomes a model for other states,” Fasawe noted.

Analysts believe this partnership could also yield strategic gains, offset energy costs, reinforce corporate social responsibility credentials, and strengthen Nigeria’s climate action efforts in line with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

While the project deployments and impact metrics kick off soon, all attention will focus on whether this telecom‑led environmental effort can translate into stronger, healthier communities across Abuja.
