Ikeja Electric Plc has commenced refunds to customers who previously paid for electricity meters under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) programme.
The distribution company disclosed this during its September virtual stakeholder engagement, a monthly forum in which it provides updates on its operations and responds to customer-raised issues.
Ikeja Electric said customers qualified for refunds would receive them as credits applied to their electricity vending transactions within the approved refund period.
The company explained that customers could monitor the progress of their refunds through its online refund dashboard by entering their meter or account numbers.
According to Ikeja Electric, the dashboard displays details including the cost of the meter, number of refunds processed, monthly refund amount, cumulative amount refunded and the date of the most recent refund.
Customers can also access their applicable refund token through the platform, with the token sent to the phone number or email address registered with the company.
The electricity provider advised customers seeking clarification or wishing to lodge complaints about their refunds to use its official complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office.
During the engagement, the company also raised concerns over the growing risks associated with the use of unauthorised electricians.
Olaniyi Olayiwola, Head of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, said recent cases involving unsafe electrical practices had resulted in fatalities.
He cautioned customers against allowing unqualified individuals to climb Ikeja Electric poles, work on power lines, interfere with electrical installations or engage in illegal connections.
“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” Olayiwola said.
He urged members of the public not to confront individuals involved in hazardous electrical activities, advising them instead to report such incidents through Ikeja Electric’s designated safety emergency channels.
Olayiwola also called on residents and communities to maintain a safe distance from high-voltage power lines.
He identified encroachment on electricity infrastructure and insufficient clearance around power lines as persistent safety concerns.
Also speaking, Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications, encouraged customers to obtain information and seek redress through Ikeja Electric’s authorised communication and complaint platforms.
Okotie said the company’s regular engagement with customers was intended to keep them informed while providing guidance on safety, access to assistance and the resolution of complaints.
