Illegal Haulage: Dangote Implores Public To Monitor Errant Truck Drivers

Dangote Group has urged members of the public to assist in monitoring both the recklessness and the illegal haulage of contraband goods by some of its truck drivers.

This is in a renewed effort to rid Dangote Group of unscrupulous drivers who engage in illegal haulage activities and others who have constituted themselves a menace to other road users.

The company has also set up hotlines for the public to call in and report such truck drivers, with a promise to appropriately compensate those who make calls that lead to arrest of errant drivers.

It noted that the trucks belonging to Dangote Cement are only allowed to carry Cement, High Grade Gypsum and Coal, while those trucks belonging to Dangote Sugar are allowed to carry sugar products and those belonging to Dangote Salt (NASCON) are authorised to carry only Salt, Combo packs and Dan Q seasoning.

The company also revealed that trucks belonging to Dangote Packaging (formerly Agrosacks), the bags producing arm of Dangote group, can only carry bags belonging to the other Dangote Business Units.

“The Management of Dangote Industries Limited hereby alert the public to report any suspected Dangote Truck driver involved in illegal haulage,” it stated.

Dangote management also issued a stern warning to individuals illegally transporting unauthorised goods through its trucks, saying “Dangote Industries wishes to warn those that illegally transport materials on Dangote trucks that such unauthorised goods, when found, shall be confiscated and such owners prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Recall that the company recently intercepted one of its branded trucks loaded with contraband items in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, arrested the drivers and handed them over to the Nigeria Customs Service for further investigations and prosecutions.

The arrest was affected by a crack team of the Company’s security personnel led by its Chief Security Officer who acted on intelligence, bordering on misconduct by some of its drivers.

The company, it would be recalled, had once announced a mouth-watering monetary reward for any member of the public who offered information that would lead to the arrest of such persons by the law enforcement agents.
