The Eid-el-Fitr celebration was almost disrupted in Asaba and its environs in Delta State as over 100 hoodlums attacked the Okpanam Divisional Police Headquarters, Oshimili North local government area of the state.
The invasion reportedly followed the death of an accident victim, from the northern part of the country, allegedly a kinsman of the assailants, who they claimed did not receive adequate care after being taken to Specialist Hospital Asaba by the Police.
During the incident, the assailants brought the victim’s corpse to the station and unleashed widespread damage.
The attackers destroyed patrol vehicles and injured Inspector Chinedu Ebago of the Crack Squad on the forehead.
Owing to reinforcement, 10 male suspects were arrested, while others fled, abandoning 14 motorcycles and one tricycle, which were recovered at the station.
The case has been referred to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for profiling and further investigation.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Bright Edafe, said, “It is nothing serious,” saying that “the station was not attacked.”
“They came in protest but because of their unruly behaviour, some of them were arrested,” he added.
