England launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L campaign in emphatic fashion with a pulsating 4-2 victory over Croatia, overcoming a spirited challenge from the Croatians to claim all three points.

The Three Lions appeared set for a comfortable evening when captain Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after England had dominated much of the first half.

Croatia, however, responded brilliantly. Martin Baturina levelled six minutes later, finishing off a move created by Petar Sučić to stun the England supporters and swing momentum in Croatia’s favour.

Just as Croatia looked poised to head into the interval on level terms, Kane struck again deep into first-half stoppage time. The Bayern Munich striker latched onto a pass from Declan Rice to restore England’s advantage and give Gareth Southgate’s side a 2-1 lead at the break.

The drama continued immediately after the restart. Petar Musa drew Croatia level once more in the 47th minute, ensuring the contest remained finely balanced and setting up a tense second half.

With Croatia growing in confidence, England needed a moment of inspiration and it arrived five minutes from time through Jude Bellingham. The midfielder produced a decisive finish to make it 3-2 and finally break Croatian resistance.

Marcus Rashford then sealed the victory in stoppage time, converting Bukayo Saka’s assist to put the result beyond doubt and cap a memorable attacking display from the Three Lions.

The win gives England an ideal start in Group L and underlines their status as one of the tournament favourites, while Croatia will be left frustrated after twice fighting back only to leave empty-handed.

Top Performer of the Match: Harry Kane (England)

The England captain led by example with two crucial first-half goals, including a composed penalty and a clinical finish in stoppage time before the break. His leadership and finishing ability laid the foundation for England’s winning start.

Key Moment

Jude Bellingham’s 85th-minute winner

After Croatia had twice erased England’s lead, Bellingham’s late strike finally tilted the contest in England’s favour. The goal broke Croatian hearts and paved the way for Rashford’s late insurance goal.
