Kano Assembly Raises The Alarm Over Threatened Wasai Dam, Seeks Urgent Intervention

The Kano State House of Assembly has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Wasai Dam, urging the state government to urgently rehabilitate and upgrade the facility to avert a potential collapse that could endanger thousands of residents in Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo Local Government Areas.

The lawmakers adopted the resolution on Tuesday following a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by members representing Gezawa, Warawa and Ungogo constituencies.

Leading the debate on behalf of the sponsors, the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Isiyaku Danja, warned that severe gully erosion along the eastern embankment of the dam had weakened the structure and posed a major environmental and humanitarian risk.

He said the failure of the dam could trigger widespread flooding, destroy farmlands, wash away critical road infrastructure and disrupt the livelihoods of thousands of people across the affected local government areas.

According to him, communities including Wasai, Adarai and other neighbouring settlements would bear the brunt of the disaster if urgent preventive measures were not taken.

Danja further noted that the collapse of the dam would not only result in the loss of agricultural land and produce but could also sever road links connecting Minjibir, Ungogo and Gezawa, with far-reaching economic and social implications.

He appealed to the Kano State Government to immediately rehabilitate and reinforce the dam to forestall what he described as an avoidable disaster.

Following deliberations, members unanimously adopted the motion. They resolved to transmit it to Governor Abba Yusuf, urging the government to commence the rehabilitation and strengthening of the Wasai Dam without delay.

The Assembly maintained that swift government intervention was necessary to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure from the threat of flooding and environmental degradation.
