The Kano State House of Assembly reconvened on Thursday under tight security as armed operatives from the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) took strategic positions around the Assembly Complex.

This heightened security presence comes as the Assembly prepares to vote on the contentious amended Emirates Council Bill.

The bill, formally known as the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, successfully passed its first reading on Wednesday.

Sponsored by the Majority Leader and representative of the Dala State Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the proposed legislation seeks to amend the original law that restructured the Emirate system in Kano.

The initial law, enacted on December 5, 2019, by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, created five new emirates in the state.

This move significantly altered the traditional power dynamics and administrative framework of the emirate council.

However, current deliberations suggest a potential reversal of these changes, with mounting speculation about the possible disbanding of the newly established emirates and the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

As the Assembly session progresses, tension remains palpable across the state reflecting the deep-seated divisions and strong sentiments surrounding the issue.

Supporters and opponents of the bill have expressed strong opinions, suggesting that whichever way the Assembly decides will likely elicit reactions from the populace.
