Kano: NDLEA Arrests 129 Drug Peddlers, Recovers 709.9kg Illicit Substance In 1 Month

The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said it has arrested a total of 129 suspected drug peddlers and secured conviction of 22 suspects in October, 2024.
The command also said 709.979kg of assorted illicit substances were recovered within the period under review.

Spokesperson of the command, Sadiq Maigatari, in a statement highlighted that the suspects arrested have been profiled; while some have been charged to court for prosecution, others have been referred to the counseling unit for support and rehabilitation.

“The recovered substances include a substantial haul of 309.991 kilograms of cannabis sativa, 394.835 kilograms of various psychotropic substances – comprising 741,600 tablets of tramadol alongside 2.789 kilograms of pregabalin and 0.027 kilograms of methamphetamine, among others.

“This operation reflects the command’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace in the state and safeguarding the health and safety of the community.”

Maigatari also noted that the command secured the conviction of 22 suspects at the federal high court sitting in Kano among which include Ibrahim Tahir, who received a 9-year prison term, James Ajayi, an ex-convict jailed for seven years, and Salisu Mohammed, a dismissed police Inspector previously convicted three times for cocaine dealing now received a 5-year prison sentence.

While expressing gratitude to NDLEA chairman, Brig Gen Buba Marwa (rtd), and other stakeholders for their unwavering support, he said the command will continue to work tirelessly with their support to combat the drug trade and promote awareness of the dangers associated with drug abuse.
