Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced the imminent conduct of local government elections in Kano State.

The revelation came during a stakeholders meeting with the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) at Africa House, Government House, Kano on Sunday.

A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, highlighted Governor Yusuf’s assurance to conduct the elections in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed financial autonomy for local governments in the country. “Our respect for accountability and in consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment trigger our readiness to conduct council elections,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Governor Yusuf assured that the forthcoming elections would be free, fair, and credible. “Our administration has allowed the previous LG Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to finish their tenure despite pressure from within, this is out of respect we have for the rule of law,” he said.

LEADERSHIP reports that preparations for the elections were underway, with the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) spearheading the efforts. “I can assure you this would hold any time soon,” Yusuf noted.

The governor also mentioned plans by the NNPP to select chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the 44 local government areas (LGAs). “We will soon invite you again for the selection of our party’s candidates to be fielded in the 44 LGAs, who will run for the offices of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors. We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” Governor Yusuf assured.
