The Kano State House of Assembly has revealed plans to conduct house Censuses, numbering, and street naming across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas in 2025.

Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Alhaji Aminu Sa’adu, revealed this on Monday evening during a chat with the Assembly’s press crew following his earlier report presentation of an estimated budget for the LGAs before the house, which was presided over by the speaker, Hon. Ismail Falgore.

He explained that the budget size for all the LGAs in 2025 amounts to about N461 billion, with a capital expenditure component of N234 Billion (51 per cent) and a recurrent expenditure component of N226 billion (49 per cent).

He said part of the budget for all LGAs was explicitly allocated to purchase new and improved seedlings to enhance agricultural practices and boost food security. At the same time, another allocation was earmarked for street naming and house numbering to scale up population data and ensure adequate security issues and emergencies are tackled.

He maintained that, following security threats, especially within the northwest states, most of the people displaced around those areas are moving to Kano in large numbers; hence, the need to have records of houses in all regions to know those residing there.

“We want to have a census of houses in each LG, each town, each hamlet to know who and who are residing in it either as homeowners or a rented house to have adequate data to be able to handle the issue of security; also, if there is any emergency, such house numbering can help us identify such locations easily,” he stated.

Hon Sa’adu also hinted that the report recommended that the state government and assembly intensify their efforts to encourage the LGAs to boost revenue drives and live up to expectations in their areas, especially given the ongoing debates on tax reforms.

On if the LGAs would be given a free hand on financial autonomy, he said, it is an opportunity provided for them to deliver to the people, adding that the laws of the LG are enshrined in the Assembly; as such, it won’t temper with it.
