Kano’s N1.5bn Auren Gata: Beyond The Wedding, An Investment In Families And Livelihoods

For 1,500 couples in Kano State, the journey into marriage came with more than the traditional solemnisation of vows. It came with furniture, bedding, food items, clothing materials, medical screening and financial support to help them establish their homes.

Known as Auren Gata, the mass wedding programme of the Kano State Government has evolved into a major social intervention, combining marriage support with economic empowerment, healthcare, family counselling and social security.

With more than N1.5bn committed to the programme, the intervention reflects an approach that views marriage not only as a religious and cultural institution but also as an important foundation for stable families and communities.

Among the beneficiaries was Haruna Bashir, who received an opportunity to begin a new chapter of his life through the programme.

For others, such as Amina Aminu and Aliyu Ibrahim, the initiative provided an opportunity to formalise their relationship after years of waiting, largely because of the financial demands associated with setting up a home.

By helping couples establish their homes, the programme provides beneficiaries with resources that could otherwise have taken years to accumulate.

For households with modest incomes, the support can also free up resources for other essential needs, including food, healthcare and education.

Putting Capital in Women’s Hands

One of the most significant economic components of the programme is the N100,000 capital grant provided to each bride.

Across 1,500 beneficiaries, the grants represent N150m in direct capital support to women.
