Following repeated clashes between miners that caused unrest, the chairman of Yauri Local Government Area in Kebbi State, Hon. Abubakar Shuaibu, has imposed a curfew from 9 pm to 6 am.
He disclosed this to our Reporter in a telephone interview.
He stated that the decision was aimed at restoring peace, protecting lives and property, and enabling security personnel to regain control of the situation.
According to the chairman, this is the second time such an incident of clashes between miners has erupted in the area. In September, the Council imposed another curfew from 10 pm to 7 am as a result of a violent clash between youths involved in gold mining in the Garin Katta Community.
An eyewitness during the clashes told Leadership reporter that two commercial motorcycle riders were caught fighting, who were suspected to be linked to the activities of illegal mining.
The source added that despite the warning and directive given by the government for ordering stoppage of all illegal mining activities in the area, the miners have continued their illegal activities.
