Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) and other relevant government agencies, have been urged to address the indiscriminate encroachment on Sango Road, Ilorin by Sunday Market traders to prevent possible accidents and other unforeseen circumstances.
Some commuters and residents that spoke with LEADERSHIP expressed concern over the growing practice of traders abandoning their designated stalls to display goods along the roadside, thereby obstructing the free flow of traffic.
According to the road users, traders have taken over significant portions of the express road to showcase their wares, while buyers also park their vehicles indiscriminately along the roadside.
They described the situation as extremely dangerous, noting that it poses serious risks to motorists, pedestrians, and the traders themselves.
A road user, Mr. Akeem Busari, lamented the worsening traffic congestion caused by the activities of the traders.
He warned that continued neglect by relevant authorities could result in accidents or other avoidable incidents .
Another commuter, Mrs. Ishola Olanrewaju, described the situation as unbearable for road users every Sunday.
She questioned why such activities persist on the busy Sango road despite repeated warnings by the state government against indiscriminate roadside trading, illegal shop construction, and obstruction of major highways.
She called on the government to ensure that traders operate within designated market spaces to safeguard lives and property.
