The Labour Party has urged authorities to intensify efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers as the nation marks International Workers’ Day.

The National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, in a May Day message on Friday in Abuja, said the day holds “deep emotional and historical significance” for the party.

He noted that since its registration in 2003, the Labour Party’s identity and ideals have remained firmly rooted in the struggles and aspirations of workers.

Asogwa acknowledged the federal government’s recent minimum wage increase aimed at easing the harsh economic realities faced by workers.

However, he stressed that much more remains to be done to cushion workers against prevailing inflationary pressures across the country.

The party praised the Nigerian Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and affiliated unions for their commitment to workers’ rights and the Nigerian project.

Asogwa assured workers that the Labour Party stands firmly with them in the collective struggle for good governance and fair wages aligned with International Labour Organisation standards.

“We assure Nigerian workers that the Labour Party stands firmly with them, and we will never abandon the collective struggle for good governance,” he said.

He urged Nigerian workers to keep faith with the Labour Party ahead of upcoming elections, expressing confidence in the “eventual triumph of the people.”
