Lagos City Marathon Breaks Down $250,000 Prize Purse For 42km Race

With just twelve days remaining until the 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, organisers have released the comprehensive breakdown of the £200,000 prize money for the elite 42km race. This substantial prize fund, equivalent to approximately $250,000, underscores the marathon’s dedication to recognising outstanding athletic achievement, drawing in top-tier athletes, and upholding its prestigious World Athletics Gold Label status.

The prize structure, applicable to both men and women in the elite category, is designed to reward excellence across the board. The victor of the 42km elite race will claim a significant £40,000, with the runner-up securing £16,000. The athlete finishing in third place will receive £12,000, while those in fourth and fifth positions will earn £9,600 and £8,000 respectively.

Further incentives extend throughout the elite field, with the sixth-place finisher taking home £6,400, seventh place earning £4,800, and the eighth-place athlete receiving £3,200. This ensures a competitive drive deep within the elite rankings.

This generous prize purse remains a significant draw for elite marathon runners hailing from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria, and other nations, as Lagos gears up to host another intensely competitive edition of Africa’s premier road race.

The 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, 14th February 2026, and will feature an exciting new race route. The course will commence from ORCA Mall, Victoria Island, traverse sections of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, and conclude at the iconic Eko Atlantic City.
