Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old John Samuel, a notorious suspected armed robber, hired assassin, and murderer, in his Epe area hideout in the State.

The suspect, originally from Akwa Ibom State is accused as the prime suspect behind a violent daylight robbery on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, where he shot and injured a businessman identified as Gbenga Obama, before stealing his gold jewellery.

It was gathered that John Samuel, who was recently released from prison on August 18 after serving a six-year term for armed robbery, immediately returned to a life of crime, terrorising residents with heightened brutality.

The victim, Mr Obama, was attacked on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, and sustained serious gunshot injuries before being robbed of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi said, “The suspect is known for his ruthless methods, often shooting victims before taking their valuables. His return to criminality shortly after prison release posed a significant threat to public safety.”

He noted that CCTV footage obtained from the crime scene captured Samuel firing an English pistol at the victim and forcibly removing the gold necklace.

Police said the suspect’s accomplice, who waited on a motorcycle nearby, facilitated a swift escape. “The victim has since been treated and discharged from medical care.”

He added that upon interrogation, “Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewellery for ₦4 million, a fraction of its actual value, demonstrating a reckless disregard for the severity of his offences.
