Lauren Sánchez, the Vice Chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, made a solo debut on the 2026 Met Gala red carpet on Monday, arriving without her husband and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos.
The couple, who are serving as honorary chairs for this year’s Costume Art exhibition, have faced significant public criticism in recent weeks. People have accused the billionaire of attempting to buy influence within New York’s elite fashion circles, leading to rumours of potential boycotts by other A-list attendees.
Sánchez arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a custom Schiaparelli gown inspired by the famous Madame X painting. Her representative noted that the choice was a deliberate nod to historical fashion moments that once sparked intense public debate.
“The inspiration behind the gown is the story of Sargent’s Madame X, and how a small detail, like the fallen jewelled strap, once sparked such a strong public reaction,” her representative stated.
While Bezos stayed away from the cameras, Sánchez helped open the show alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour. The theme for this year’s Gala is Costume Art, which examines how clothes and the human body have changed throughout history.
