Following the remarkable outing of the Labour Party in the general elections, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has appealed to  security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS) to leave the party alone in the interest of  democracy and rule of law.

In a press statement made available to journalists in Abuja and signed by the national coordinator Comrade James Okoronkwo, the group said since  Labour Party made an impressive performance in the election by winning 35 seats in the National Assembly, 12 states in the presidential and  governorship of Abia State the DSS had occupied its national headquarters in Abuja, thereby denying the Barr. Julius Abure – led leadership access to the facility ostensibly to mar its preparation for the forthcoming Imo State governorship election.

The group decried the harassment and intimidation of the national chairman of the party, Barr. Julius Abure, on trumped up charges, saying he is a victim of political intimidation and abuse of power by the powers that be in the APC to weaken the Labour Party so that they cannot argue its case at the election petitions tribunal.

The group passed a vote of confidence on the national chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Julius Abure for building “a structure-less political party in six months” to a formidable opposition party in Nigeria, adding that only the Labour Party has the moral compass, competence, manifesto and goodwill to pull Nigeria from the doldrums.
