Lobi Stars Chairman Vows Makurdi Return, Coaching Overhaul

The Acting Chairman of Lobi Stars Football Club, Mr. Ikya, has issued a passionate rallying cry to supporters, promising a comprehensive structural overhaul and a swift return to their home ground in Makurdi to salvage the club’s season.

Speaking to the press, Ikya addressed the club’s turbulent period, the suspension of the head coach, and the “hostile” reality of playing home fixtures away from the Benue State capital. He confirmed that playing on neutral ground had significantly hindered the team’s promotion ambitions. “Playing away from home affects your team no matter what,” Ikya admitted. “But the Governor has directed that we do everything humanly possible to ensure our second-round games are played in Makurdi.”

Work is currently underway at McCarthy Stadium to improve the pitch and stands, with the Chairman optimistic about the team’s return before the next round of fixtures.

Regarding technical changes, Ikya clarified that former head coach Bala Abubakar is on “indefinite suspension,” not sacked. He revealed a new philosophy of “promoting our own,” with a coaching staff now comprised entirely of former Lobi Stars legends. “We’ve put together a coaching crew that understands what it means to play for Lobi,” Ikya stated.

Dispelling “lies” about government support, Ikya firmly defended Governor Hyacinth Alia, revealing the Governor personally intervened to settle outstanding registration debts that had led to a transfer ban.

Acknowledging the club’s struggles, Ikya admitted the team was not “primed for promotion” when the current board took over. He confirmed new signings, including Bello Raji Egigogo (formerly of Niger Tornadoes) and Jonathan John Abu from an English football academy, with potentially four more players joining training on Monday to bolster the squad.

Concluding with an emotional plea for unity, Ikya emphasised, “Lobi Stars is not about me. It’s a brand. I am only steering the ship.” The team resumes training on Monday, focused on restoring Lobi Stars to its former glory in the Nigerian top flight.
