Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress (APC) member in Kano State, has described the defection of the State’s one-time deputy governor, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, from the APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as a significant setback for the cause of the ruling party.
Ahmad, reacting via a Facebook post on Monday night, lamented the development, stating, “Gawuna was a strong pillar of our party, losing him to an opposition party is a huge blow to our cause.”
LEADERSHIP reports that Gawuna, who until Monday morning, was the chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), resigned from his position, citing compliance with directives tied to Nigeria’s electoral laws.
In a resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, Gawuna said his decision was in compliance with directives tied to Nigeria’s electoral laws.
“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” he had stated.
The former APC governorship candidate in the 2023 elections is expected to formalise his move to the ADC this Tuesday amid ongoing political realignments linked to former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, having met witht former on Monday night.
Gawuna expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege.
“I am profoundly grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, for the opportunity to serve. It has been a privilege to contribute to the growth and development of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and our country,” he said.
He also reflected on his next steps, placing his future in divine hands.
“I place my future in the hands of Allah (SWT), and I seek His guidance on my next course of action,” Gawuna added.
The former FMBN chairman further assured of a smooth transition process.
“I remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition process and will hand over all responsibilities in accordance with established procedures and directives,” he said.
