Lukarawa Terrorists Block Major Niger Road, Cause Panic

Suspected members of the Lukarawa terrorist group on Monday blocked the Mokwa–New Bussa Road in Niger State, causing panic among residents, motorists and commuters in the affected area.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the terrorists, numbering in their hundreds and riding on motorcycles, barricaded the road around Zurgurma in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state, disrupting vehicular movement and forcing travellers to seek alternative routes.

Sources said the armed group also invaded Zurgurma and other adjoining communities, creating fear among residents and compelling many motorists to abandon the road over concerns for their safety.

The incident reportedly heightened tension in the area as residents scrambled for safety while economic and social activities were temporarily disrupted.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said a joint security team promptly responded to the threat.

According to him, the swift intervention by security operatives forced the suspected terrorists to flee the area before causing further harm.

Abiodun disclosed that the attackers escaped into the adjoining Ibbi Forest following the deployment of security personnel.

He added that security agencies have continued to monitor the area and are taking necessary measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents and road users.

The latest incident highlights the persistent security concerns in parts of Niger State, where armed groups have continued to target communities and major transportation corridors despite ongoing security operations.
