World Cup winner Rodri will undergo back surgery on Monday, new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca confirmed, casting uncertainty over the midfielder’s availability for the upcoming season.
The 30-year-old Spain captain, who led his nation to World Cup glory last week and claimed the Golden Ball as tournament MVP, has struggled with persistent injuries over the past two club campaigns.
An ACL tear sidelined him for most of 2024-25, and further setbacks last season limited his appearances.
Despite returning to top form at the World Cup, Maresca told reporters that surgery and recovery are now prioritized. “He needs a holiday, rest, and recuperation before rejoining us,” the Italian said, without specifying a return timeline.
Maresca dismissed rumors linking Rodri to Real Madrid, calling speculation “normal” for elite players.
He also confirmed most other absent players would rejoin the squad days before City face Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 16.
In his first press conference since succeeding Pep Guardiola, Maresca acknowledged the challenge of filling the legendary coach’s shoes, calling it “a privilege” to have worked as Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022-23 Treble-winning season.
