Manchester United are expected to remain active in the transfer market as they continue their midfield overhaul, despite already strengthening the squad with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

The duo have added technical quality, composure and valuable Premier League experience to Michael Carrick’s squad. However, the Red Devils are still searching for a more athletic midfielder capable of shielding the defence, carrying the ball through midfield and coping with high-intensity pressing.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Roma’s Manu Koné and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have all emerged as potential targets, although the transfer fees involved are likely to determine which move United eventually pursue.

According to sources within the football agency industry, Manchester United retain a strong interest in Baleba. The Brighton midfielder is believed to be open to a move to Old Trafford, with preliminary discussions over personal terms having reportedly taken place last summer. However, United had not submitted a fresh offer to Brighton at the time of the report.

United have already confirmed the signings of Santos and Tielemans as part of their midfield rebuild following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury.

Baleba continues to appeal because of his athleticism, ball-winning ability and proven Premier League experience. Nevertheless, Brighton’s hefty valuation remains a significant stumbling block.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT reports that United have made an enquiry about Roma midfielder Manu Koné, who is expected to command a fee in the region of €60 million. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton also remains on the club’s radar, although the England international would likely require an even larger transfer fee.

While Baleba arguably offers the most explosive physical attributes, Koné may represent the more financially prudent option. The French midfielder has built an impressive reputation through spells in the Bundesliga and Serie A, as well as on the international stage, and could provide similar energy and defensive solidity at a more attainable price.

Santos is expected to strengthen United’s ball-winning capabilities, while Tielemans brings creativity, vision and leadership to the midfield. Even so, the club are still keen to recruit a dynamic midfielder capable of covering large areas of the pitch, resisting pressure and driving the team forward with purposeful runs.

Although Baleba appears to fit that profile perfectly, United must weigh his qualities against Brighton’s demanding valuation. Koné, meanwhile, is increasingly viewed as a realistic alternative, while Wharton’s expected price tag makes him the least likely of the three targets to arrive at Old Trafford this summer.
