As the National Sports Commission (NSC) continues to spearhead transformative reforms within Nigerian sports, basketball promoter and founder of the Mark D Ball Basketball Championship, Igoche Mark, has warmly welcomed these developments, expressing profound optimism for the future of sport across the nation.
In a statement released from Abuja, Igoche Mark declared: “The establishment of the National Sports Commission (NSC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR in November 2024 has truly marked a paradigm shift in Nigerian sports administration. Under the astute leadership of Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olapade, the commission has embarked on a transformative journey to revitalise the nation’s sports sector, injecting much-needed vitality into the industry.”
Igoche Mark, a long-standing and vocal advocate for basketball development in Nigeria, particularly lauded the NSC’s flagship initiative, the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE). He stated: “The RHINSE programme is strategically positioned to transform sports into a significant contributor to Nigeria’s GDP, propelling the country into a new era of sporting prosperity.
The comprehensive plans to renovate several major stadiums nationwide and the innovative Junior Athletes Initiative (JAI) serve as empirical evidence of the commission’s unwavering commitment to building a robust sports ecosystem that benefits athletes, administrators, and fans alike.”
Reflecting on the tangible impact of these reforms, Igoche Mark observed: “The sports sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP has now risen to over 1%, an unprecedented achievement that powerfully underscores the immense, untapped potential of Nigerian sports. The entire Nigerian sports ecosystem is palpably ‘vibing’ to these reforms, with substantial private investments now pouring in and grassroots sports receiving a much-needed boost, thereby empowering young athletes to dream big and achieve greatness.”
However, Igoche Mark underscored the critical need for the NSC to prioritise basketball’s development. He urged: “It is absolutely imperative that the commission resolves the lingering crisis within Nigerian basketball without external interference, by strategically leveraging local solutions to address local challenges and, in doing so, unlock the full, immense potential of Nigerian basketball.”
The esteemed basketball promoter conveyed his strong conviction that Nigerian sports are on the precipice of a revolution, citing the recent success of the Super Eagles at the AFCON and the promising potential of the country’s basketball teams.
