France captain Kylian Mbappé has ended his two-decade partnership with Nike and signed with Swiss sportswear company On, which is making its entry into football.
On announced the agreement on Friday on their website, confirming that Mbappé will become the centrepiece of its new football venture and work directly with its product teams on the development and testing of future football footwear and apparel.
The deal brings to an end Mbappé’s long-standing association with Nike, which began when he was a teenager. The Real Madrid forward had become one of the American sportswear giant’s leading football ambassadors.
On, founded in 2010 and traditionally known for running and tennis products, plans to launch its first football boots in 2027 as it seeks to establish a presence in the sport.
Mbappé said the opportunity to help develop a new football range was central to his decision to join the Swiss company.
“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow’s game,” Mbappé said.
“I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what’s possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football.
“We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”
The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, although Reuters reported that the deal includes both cash and equity components.
On has also appointed former France international Thierry Henry as its Director of Football. The 1998 World Cup winner has been working with the company behind the scenes since late 2025, helping shape its football strategy and product development.
Henry will have a role in product development, athlete relationships and the company’s wider approach to football.
On’s move into football marks a major expansion for a brand that has built its reputation primarily in running and later tennis. Tennis great Roger Federer is among its shareholders and has also collaborated with the company after ending his Nike partnership towards the end of his playing career.
Mbappé’s departure represents a significant change for Nike, which had been associated with the French forward since 2006 and made him one of the most recognisable faces of its football business.
The 2018 World Cup winner is also the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 22 goals across World Cup appearances.
Nike has nevertheless retained several prominent footballers, including Norway striker Erling Haaland and Brazil forward Vinicius Junior.
Mbappé’s switch also follows Spain international Lamine Yamal’s move from Nike to Adidas in 2024, as leading sportswear companies continue to compete for football’s biggest names.
