An elite group of just four players have reached the pinnacle of international endurance by appearing in eight different AFCON tournaments. As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations begin in Morocco on Sunday December 21, AFFA ACHO examines the careers of Rigobert Song (Cameroon), Ahmed Hassan (Egypt), André Ayew (Ghana), and Youssef Msakni (Tunisia), who have set a record that seems almost untouchable.

The Africa Cup of Nations is a stage where careers are defined. While titles and goals often dominate the headlines, the achievement of a single player returning to the tournament year after year, defying time and form to represent their nation, speaks to a different kind of legacy.

In the world of football, where careers are often short and peaks fleeting, true longevity is the rarest of crowns. Nowhere is this more evident than in the demanding, biennial crucible of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). To be selected once is an honor; to return for nearly two decades is the mark of a legend.

Rigobert Song

Key Achievements: 2x AFCON champion, 36 AFCON matches (joint-record), 137 Cameroon caps (record), 4x World Cups.A legendary defender known for his strength and leadership. He was captain for five of his eight AFCON tournaments (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008) and led Cameroon to back-to-back AFCON titles in 2000 and 2002.

He scored the decisive penalty in the 2000 AFCON final shootout against Nigeria to secure the title.

Song’s career was marked by remarkable durability, playing eight consecutive AFCONs from 1996 to 2010.

Ahmed Hassan

Key Achievements: 4x AFCON champion (record), 2x AFCON Most Valuable Player, 184 Egypt caps.A dynamic midfielder who was the cornerstone of Egypt’s golden generation. He was crucial in leading Egypt to three consecutive AFCON titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010.

He was Top-scorere at the 2015 AFCON (3 goals) and led Ghana to the final as captain. From 2008 to 2023, his career has evolved from a teenage talent to the team’s captain and elder statesman.

Youssef Msakni

Key Achievements: Longtime Tunisia captain, 100+ Tunisia caps, CHAN 2011 champion.

A versatile forward and Tunisia’s captain for many years, known for his skillful dribbling and creativity. His eight-tournament span (2010-2023) saw him become the face of Tunisian football across a generation.

He scored a stunning 25-meter goal to beat Algeria 1-0 at the 2013 AFCON, voted the goal of the tournament.

Msakni missed the 2018 World Cup due to a serious knee injury but fought back to continue representing Tunisia at the highest level.

While their careers are very different, they all share a few defining traits each maintained world-class form for 15-20 years. They were all team captains and symbols for their nations. They coincided with and contributed to golden periods for their national teams transitioning from young talents to veteran leaders over their careers.

This record may stand for a long time. The physical and tactical demands of modern football make such a long international career increasingly difficult. The achievement of Ayew and Msakni, extending their runs into the 2020s, might represent the pinnacle of what’s possible in the contemporary game.

Their shared legacy is one of unwavering professionalism and an unparalleled love for the national jersey. In a tournament known for its passion and unpredictability, these four kings provided something equally valuable: the certainty of their presence, tournament after tournament, inspiring teammates and captivating fans across Africa.
