The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has decorated Deacon Shola Mese (JP) as an Ambassador of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), in recognition of his contributions to golf development and women’s empowerment.

Mese, the Vice-Captain of Ogunu Golf Club, Warri, Delta State, and founder of the Shola Mese Foundation, was formally decorated during a courtesy visit by the LGAN President, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, and members of her delegation to his office in Abuja.

Speaking during the presentation, Dr Ahmed described the AACT as one of Africa’s premier women’s golf championships and a vital platform for promoting the sport among women across the continent.

She disclosed that the 2026 edition of the championship will be held in Abuja from 2 to 7 November, with more than 30 African nations expected to participate.

According to her, the tournament will not only elevate women’s golf but also boost tourism, encourage youth participation in sports and further enhance Nigeria’s reputation on the international golfing stage.

Dr Ahmed said Mese’s appointment reflected his longstanding commitment to the growth of golf and his support for initiatives aimed at empowering women.

“Deacon Shola Mese embodies excellence, leadership and dedication to the development of golf in Nigeria,” she said.

“His appointment as AACT Ambassador will inspire golfers, attract key stakeholders and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in continental golf competitions.”

The LGAN President added that preparations for the championship were progressing steadily, with strong backing from government institutions and private-sector partners.

“We are determined to deliver a world-class tournament that will showcase Nigeria’s hospitality, organisational capacity and passion for golf,” she said.

As part of the ceremony, the association also presented Mese with an Award of Appreciation in recognition of his contributions to golf development and women’s empowerment initiatives.

Responding, Mese expressed gratitude to the LGAN leadership for the honour and pledged his full support towards ensuring a successful championship.

“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. The development of golf, particularly women’s golf, deserves sustained investment, encouragement and strategic support,” he said.

Mese noted that his passion for supporting women was rooted in personal experience, paying tribute to his late mother, whose influence continues to shape his values and philanthropic work.

“Women occupy a special place in my heart. I lost my mother, whom I loved dearly, and the values she instilled in me continue to inspire everything I do,” he said.

The newly appointed ambassador pledged to leverage his position to raise awareness about the championship across golf clubs and communities nationwide.

“I accept this responsibility with pride and humility. I will work closely with stakeholders to ensure that the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy is a successful and memorable event,” he added.

Mese further noted that hosting the championship presents a unique opportunity to position Nigeria as a leading golf destination in Africa while creating pathways for young golfers to develop and excel.
