A Michael Jordan jersey worn during Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $12.3 million (£9.3 million), a new record for any game-worn Jordan item.
Jordan wore the jersey during his final season with the Chicago Bulls, the campaign later known as “The Last Dance.” The Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz 4-2 in that series to claim Jordan’s sixth and final NBA championship. He was named Finals MVP in all six of his title-winning seasons.
The sale topped the previous Jordan memorabilia record of $10.1 million (£7.6 million), set by his jersey from Game 1 of the same 1998 Finals. The Game 3 jersey was offered by entrepreneur Ryan Gough through Joopiter, Pharrell Williams’ digital auction house, which had estimated it would sell for between $10 million and $15 million (£7.5 million to £11.3 million).
Joopiter described the jersey as one of the most significant game-worn sports objects ever brought to auction, saying it was worn during a period that helped transform basketball into a global cultural phenomenon.
Jordan’s 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello also sold, fetching $2.7 million (£2 million), four times the previous auction record for that model.
The overall record for game-worn sports memorabilia remains the jersey worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, when he was said to have “called the shot.” It sold for $24.1 million (£18.2 million) in 2024.
