Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, has lauded the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering commitment to the annual First Baby of the Year initiative.

Mahmoud described the gesture as a compassionate and enduring tradition that reflects her deep concern for maternal and child welfare, as well as her commitment to nurturing hope at the very start of life.

She made the remarks when she joined the Mrs Tinubu to welcome the first baby of the year born at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja.

The minister, who extended warm congratulations to the proud parents and family of the newborn, described the child’s arrival as a profound symbol of hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings for the FCT and the nation.

She also commended the unwavering dedication of health workers, doctors, nurses, midwives, and support staff, who ensure safe deliveries and quality maternal and child healthcare, particularly during festive periods.

Mahmoud, therefore, reaffirmed the FCT administration’s commitment, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to bolster the healthcare system through enhanced facilities, skilled personnel, and broader access to services.

“As we usher in 2026, let us recommit to safeguarding mothers and children, supporting families, and fostering a healthier Abuja,” she said.

Mahmoud stressed that the FCT Administration under the leadership of Nyesom Wike, will always encourage all residents to prioritize health and family well-being in building a prosperous future together.

Meanwhile, the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has commenced the distribution of essential neonatal kits to nursing mothers at primary healthcare centres across the six area councils of the Territory.

Mandate secretary FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, who was represented by the director of Child Development Department, Dr. Idris Yahaya said that the distribution of essential kits to nursing mothers was an enduring tradition that reflects the First Lady’s deep concern for maternal and child welfare, as well as her commitment to nurturing hope at the very start of life.

Items distributed include baby wrapper/blanket, baby clothes, disposable or reusable diapers, and baby towels.

Other items include baby soap, baby lotion or petroleum jelly, methylated spirit (for cord care), hand sanitizer, amongst others.
