The Houston Dynamo have brought back a familiar face, officially announcing the acquisition of Nigerian winger Ibrahim Aliyu. The 24-year-old returns to the MLS side after a stint with the Columbus Crew, signing a contract that will keep him in Texas through 2026, with an option for an additional year.

Aliyu is no stranger to the fans at Shell Energy Stadium. During his previous spell with the Dynamo from 2023 to 2025, the Nigerian international was a consistent presence on the pitch, featuring in 90 matches across all competitions. He found the back of the net 12 times and provided nine assists, quickly establishing himself as a key cog in the team’s attack.

His contributions went beyond individual statistics. Aliyu was integral to one of the most successful periods in recent club history, playing a pivotal role in securing the 2023 U.S. Open Cup title. He also helped propel the team to the 2023 Western Conference Final and was part of the squad that secured consecutive playoff berths in his first two years with the club.

Dynamo President Pat Onstad expressed his excitement about the reunion, highlighting the strategic thinking behind the move. “We are pleased to welcome Aliyu Ibrahim back to Houston, where he played an important role during two successful seasons with our Club,” Onstad said.

The club president outlined a specific vision for Aliyu’s role in the current squad. “As we continue evolving our system this season, we are looking to add depth to our wingback group, and Aliyu has the qualities to thrive in that role,” Onstad explained.

“His ability to cover ground, attack space and contribute on both sides of the ball fits well with the expectations of our wide players. We look forward to welcoming him and his family back to the city of Houston.”

On the international stage, Aliyu has previously represented Nigeria at the youth level, notably featuring for the Flying Eagles during the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

His return to Houston is seen as a move to add both experience and dynamic energy to the Dynamo’s flanks as they look to build on their recent successes.
