The Nasarawa State Government has challenged its two state-owned football clubs, Nasarawa United (men’s) and Nasarawa Amazons (women’s), to clinch their respective league titles and secure qualification for continental competitions.
Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, issued the directive during the final of the 2025 Nasarawa State Governor’s Cup Football Tournament. He expressed confidence that both clubs possess the talent and infrastructure to succeed.
“As a responsible Government, we remain committed to seeing our teams, both Nasarawa United and Nasarawa Amazons football Clubs, play in the continent, not just to win the domestic league titles,” Kwanta stated, adding that the government is working diligently to achieve this ambition.
He highlighted the significant investment made by the government in the teams, expecting “nothing but excellence.” Both clubs are reportedly in strong positions to meet these targets.
Regarding upcoming national events, Kwanta confirmed that preparations are underway for the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, and the National Sports Festival in Enugu State. The state aims to surpass its previous achievements, with discussions already in progress and committees to be formed soon.
Kwanta also mentioned upgrades to sporting facilities, including the renovation of the swimming pool at the old Presidential Lodge in Lafia and other indoor sports facilities, alongside the recently refurbished Lafia City Stadium. He thanked Governor Abdullahi Sule for his commitment to sports development.
