Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC), has pledged technical support for the upcoming Nigerian Electric Supply Industry (NESI) Games.
He made the commitment when the Games’ Steering Committee pa to Mr Dikko’s office at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. He stated that the Games align with the Commission’s objectives and President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
“We are ready to give our full support and provide technical assistance to ensure the NESI Games are held successfully,” Mr Dikko affirmed.
Dr Anthony Obiora, Chairman of the NESI Week Steering Committee, highlighted that the NESI Games represent the first nationally structured sporting event for Nigeria’s electricity supply industry. Its aims include promoting workforce well-being, leadership development, and national sports development.
“The NESI Games are designed to promote workforce wellness, foster collaboration across sectors, develop leadership, and, crucially, boost our sports economy,” Dr Obiora explained.
The Games will feature nine sports, including football, athletics, volleyball, and e-sports, with participants drawn from the NESI ecosystem. The event will be held in phases, with regional qualifiers and quarter-finals culminating in the national finals from 15th-20th November 2026 at the National Stadium in Abuja.
Mr Dikko encouraged the Steering Committee to develop sports facilities within their operational areas and inspire members to contribute to community development through sport.
Dr Obiora expressed confidence in the event’s success, particularly with the backing of stakeholders like the NSC. He thanked Mr Dikko for the assurance of support, stating, “This is the backing we need, and with the support of other stakeholders, we are sure this first-time event will be a success, leveraging our experience in sports development and organisation.”
The NSC Chairman’s support is expected to significantly bolster the NESI Games, a crucial step towards promoting sports development in Nigeria and showcasing talent from the electricity supply industry.
