Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Abia State chapter has shown support for the campaign by the wife of the governor, Priscilla Otti, to end gender-based violence in the state.

The chapter stated this in a statement by its chairperson, Josephine Ogwo, and the secretary, Sally Anyaso, yesterday, in Umuahia, the state capital.

“Mrs Otti’s idea to establish a gender-based violence team to check violence against women and the girl-child in the state is a welcome development,” the statement noted.

They lauded her for visiting one Amarachi Lawrence, who was hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, after her husband, Lawrence Chukwukere, reportedly brutalised her.

“We condemn the inhuman treatment meted to Amarachi Lawrence by the husband and Lovejane Nwami, their landlady and call on the authorities to ensure justice for them.”

They extolled Mrs Otti for paying the hospital bills of six discharged indigent patients, totalling over N3 million, when she visited the centre to mark the 2024 International Day of Charity.

“These gestures are heartening and demonstrate that she and the administration of her husband, Alex Otti, care for the welfare and wellbeing of Abians, especially the less privileged.”

They, therefore, urged her to continue with the good-spirited gestures to the downtrodden in society and assured her that the chapter would partner with her office in the campaign.
