NEMA Distributes Relief Materials To 22,000 Jigawa Households

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has flagged off the distribution of relief materials to over 22,000 flood victims in Jigawa State.

Speaking at the occasion held in Dutse, the state capital, the director-general (DG) of the agency, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, said, the beneficiaries were those affected by flood disaster in 2022.

He explained that the items will be distributed under the agency’s 2023 Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI) aimed at assisting the flood victims to improve their economy and source of livelihood.

The DG who was represented by the director of Human Resource Management of the agency, Alhaji Musa Zakari added that the items to be distributed included livelihood equipment, food , non-food and farm inputs.

“The livelihood equipment included sewing and grinding machines, while the non-food items were mosquito nets, mats, blankets, buckets and mattresses,” he said.

According to him, the food items included rice (25kg, beans (10kg), sorghum (10kg).

“The farm inputs included: maize and rice seeds, herbicides, pesticides, growth enhancers, liquid fertiliser, water pumps and sprayers,” DG added.

In his remarks, governor Umar Namadi, commended the federal government for the intervention, describing it as timely considering the economic challenges in the state and country.

Namadi, who was represented by his deputy, Aminu Usman, urged the beneficiaries to make best use of the materials.

During the 2022 flooding disaster over 150 people lost their lives, while over 200,000 were displaced, and hundreds of hectares of farm lands, roads and public infrastructure destroyed in the state.
