Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Neymar has made significant progress in his recovery from injury, although the Italian tactician remains undecided on whether the forward will be included in Brazil’s final World Cup squad.
The Brazilian superstar has not featured for the national team since October 2023 due to persistent injury problems, but remains hopeful of appearing at what could be his fourth FIFA World Cup.
Ancelotti included Neymar in Brazil’s preliminary squad and is expected to announce his final 26-man list on May 18.
Speaking to Reuters, the former Real Madrid manager praised Neymar’s influence both on and off the pitch, insisting the forward remains hugely respected within the Brazil camp.
“Neymar is much loved,” Ancelotti said. “Not only by the supporters, but by the players as well.”
“If you call Neymar into the squad, it does not create any problems in the dressing room because he is admired by everyone.”
The 34-year-old forward remains Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 international goals and continues to command enormous support despite his recent injury setbacks.
Ancelotti acknowledged that selecting Neymar would not be a straightforward decision, stressing that the coaching staff must carefully assess both his physical condition and the overall balance of the squad.
“He is recovering from a difficult period,” the coach explained. “But he is working hard, playing regularly again and improving a lot.”
The debate surrounding Neymar’s inclusion has intensified following comments from Lionel Messi, who recently spoke glowingly about his former teammate at FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Ancelotti admitted he had received advice from several people regarding the squad selection process, but emphasised that the final decision would be based purely on football considerations.
Brazilian supporters will now anxiously await the final squad announcement as Neymar battles to secure a place at another global tournament.
