The Federal Government and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen defence cooperation and intelligence sharing between both countries.

The agreement was signed on Sunday in Amman, Jordan, by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces, Major General Yousef A. Alhnaity.

This was contained in a statement issued by the minister’s Personal Assistant, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, and made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

According to the statement, the agreement was aimed at boosting bilateral defence relations and enhancing cooperation in intelligence sharing, security and regional stability.

The collaboration will also cover joint military training programmes, exchange of defence expertise, counter-terrorism operations, defence research and industrial cooperation.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Matawalle described the MoU as a major step in deepening relations between Nigeria and Jordan amid growing global security threats.

He said, “Nigeria and Jordan recognise the value of mutually beneficial cooperation and remain committed to fostering stronger defence ties.

“This partnership is aimed at deepening collaboration in promoting peace, security, and stability within our respective regions.”

The minister also stressed the need for technology transfer through the establishment of a production line factory in Nigeria in line with the provisions of the DICON Act.

He noted that the agreement reflected the commitment of both nations to strengthen mutual trust and promote joint actions towards regional and global peace.
