Speakers at a Twitter Spaces conversation organised by the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) on the possibility of the implementation of the Maputo Protocol in Nigeria said Nigerian can only make progress if women’s rights are protected.

The Maputo Protocol is an African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa.

Speaking on the challenges facing the implementation of the charter during the Twitter Spaces organised by WRAPA, the executive director of BOABA Rights, Bunmi Dipo-Salami, said when women’s rights are protected, the country would move forward.

“When women make progress, the country makes progress. If a woman is not included in politics and business, it affects the country because she won’t be productive.

“Any country that protects women from harm, that country makes progress. When the lives of women are protected, it grows the GDP of the country.  Women must be carried along in politics and people must ensure that they are protected. There must be political will to protect women,” Bunmi said, adding that many men are exposed and are supporting women adding that they should be carried along for the full implementation of the Maputo protocol.

“We need more numbers. It should be a campaign that goes beyond women because we want Nigeria to make progress,” Bunmi said, adding that the advocacy they are doing is part of the implementation of the Maputo protocol.

“Citizens must participate in ensuring that we implement it, “ Bunmi said of the Maputo protocol.
