Nigerian artistes generated more than N60 billion in revenue from Spotify in 2025, according to the streaming platform’s annual “Loud & Clear” report released on Monday in Lagos.

The report, which highlights the economic impact of music streaming, revealed that earnings by Nigerian creators on the platform have increased by more than 140 per cent over the past two years.

Spotify noted that the growth reflects the expanding global reach of Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, as well as the increasing commercial opportunities within the country’s creative industry.

According to the data, Nigerian music recorded strong engagement both locally and internationally in 2025.

The platform reported a total of 30.3 billion streams for Nigerian music, while listeners spent about 1.6 billion hours streaming songs by Nigerian artistes during the year.

The report also showed that more than 1.3 billion first-time discoveries of Nigerian music were made by new listeners on the platform, representing a 26 per cent increase compared to 2024.

On the domestic front, Nigerian artistes accounted for over 80 per cent of songs featured on Spotify Nigeria’s Daily Top 50 chart, while local consumption of Nigerian music grew by 170 per cent year-on-year.

Spotify further highlighted the increasing participation of female and independent artistes within the ecosystem.

According to the report, streams by female Nigerian artistes increased by 55 per cent, while independent artistes recorded a 75 per cent growth in streams.

Additionally, 58 per cent of total royalties paid to Nigerian music creators on the platform went to independent artistes and their labels.

Commenting on the development, Jocelyn Muhutu Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Africa, said the Nigerian market continues to demonstrate the global influence of African music.

“What we are seeing is a market where talent is not only reaching new audiences around the world but also building deeper connections at home,” she said.

She added that Nigerian artistes appeared in about 320 million user playlists globally, while more than 60 million playlists featuring Nigerian music were created on the platform in 2025.

The report also pointed to evolving listening patterns among Nigerian audiences. While Afrobeats remains dominant, other genres gaining traction include Pop Urbane, Alternative Pop, Anime and Emo, and Drill.

Spotify noted that diversification in listening habits is creating new opportunities for emerging and niche artistes in the Nigerian music landscape.
