The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, in partnership with the International Labour Organization, has launched an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Implementation Guide for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch, director-general of NECA, Adewale Smatt-Oyerinde, said ESG had become a critical factor in determining long-term business sustainability, competitiveness and access to global opportunities.

He noted that many MSMEs face challenges in understanding and implementing ESG requirements cost-effectively, prompting NECA and its partners to develop the guide following extensive research into ESG awareness and adoption among Nigerian businesses.

According to him, the guide provides practical, accessible support for MSMEs to understand ESG concepts, implement sustainable business practices, identify ESG risks and opportunities, and improve access to finance and markets.

Oyerinde said there is growing pressure from investors, regulators, consumers and global value chains for businesses of all sizes to demonstrate responsible and sustainable practices.

He reaffirmed NECA’s commitment to supporting businesses through continuous engagement, training, advisory services and strategic partnerships to deepen ESG adoption across sectors.

He also called on government institutions, financial organisations, development partners, and private-sector stakeholders to collaborate to create an enabling environment for MSMEs to embrace sustainability practices.

According to him, supporting MSMEs in adopting ESG principles is essential for inclusive economic growth, job creation, and sustainable national development in Nigeria.
