‘Nigerian Politicians Have Legitimised Anti-Party Activities’

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Ogbonna Nwuke, has accused Nigerian politicians of legitimising anti-party activities ahead of the 2027 general election.

Nwuke, who is also a chieftain  of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the accusation yesterday in a brief a chat with LEADERSHIP Weekend in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

“The good thing is that they thought us something new. You have thought that there is no longer anything like anti-party? If people can stay in their party, work for another party and destroy their party, then, can there be anti-party? The answer is no.

“So, when they commit anti-party and dress it up; when we commit anti-party, we will dress it up too. There is nothing wrong with that. I am  talking about me, I don’t know about others. I am saying that if I decide to do anti-party, I know you cannot do anything to me because the discipline on which anti-party is anchored is gone.

“So, we have a Rainbow Coalition, they say. So, we are looking for the head of the snake, we don’t know where it is. Whether the snake is in PDP or APC, we cannot tell. So that is the thing.

“In my view, this is our country, like it or not, there is no better thing than democracy. Though there will be errors made here or there but we need to learn from them; we need to push forward,” he said.

Nwuke, however, dismissed the insinuations that several APC members in Rivers State will dump the party following the withdrawal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the governorship race.

He linked the development to the new Electoral Act, which he described as being an overbearing act of Parliament.

Nwuke said, “Do you look at your laws at all; laws that are tying your legs and your hands. We have an Electoral Act that is overbearing, which says you can’t even register when the portal is closed. Something that is a continuous process yet they want to block that.

“You have right to belong to another party; you have a right to shift but they are now telling you that you cannot. They dress it up in codes of law.”
